John Challenger
John Challenger is an organist based in Salisbury (UK) and performs regularly across the UK and Europe. He holds the position of Assistant Director of Music at Salisbury Cathedral, where he is responsible for accompanying the daily liturgy on the celebrated Father Willis organ of 1877. In addition to his work as an organist, John is Assistant Conductor of Salisbury Musical Society and a participating musician in educational projects with the music charity La Folia.
John received his musical education as a chorister at Hereford Cathedral, studying the organ with Geraint Bowen. He was an Organ Scholar under Andrew Nethsingha at St John's College, Cambridge (2008–12), returning to the college to act as Director of Music during early 2017. A pupil of Frédéric Blanc, David Briggs, Jeremy Filsell, and the late David Sanger, John obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists in 2008.
He has performed in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, the United States, and at venues right across the UK including King's College Cambridge, Westminster Cathedral and Cadogan Hall. To date, he has released five solo recordings from the Father Willis organ of Salisbury Cathedral, all of which have attracted critical praise.
Recent projects at Salisbury Cathedral include the annual Organ Prom (which attracts audiences of over 1,000 people), the Planets Project, school workshops with Salisbury's historic Father Willis organ (most recently focusing on the music of Messiaen), and the NHS fundraising album Salisbury Meditation. Upcoming work includes the organisation of a year-long celebration in 2027 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Salisbury organ, including a newly-filmed production of Healey Willan's Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue, due for release on YouTube in January 2027.
